Blast From The Past – February 1, 2008 - God Is Love...

I John 4: 7-12 -- Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

When we read God is love in the Bible, it means God defines love. This love is not an attribute of God, love is His nature. If we would be honest, human love for the most part is based on something. We love based on a requirement that we have that is fulfilled. I love her because... I love him because... God's love is unconditional. He loves us not based on anything but His nature. It is His nature to love. The divorce shows that many of us love based on feelings and emotions, which change. One writer believes that the closest humans come to unconditional love is the love a parent has for their child. We love them whether or not they meet our expectations.

God's love is far above what we could ever comprehend. It is not the fuzzy, soft, drunk, weak, love that some earthlings experience. Verses in the Bible like John 3:16 [For God so loved the world...] and Romans 5:8 [But God commended His love for us...] lets us know that there are no conditions placed on us. He does ask us to make any promises to do anything before He loves us. The love God has for me and you was not initiated because of anything He found in me or you. God loves us because He is love. And, so as Canton Jones sings, how can we sing about love without singing about You?

And, while we say we love. Do we really? Many of us do not love with the God kind of love. And, if we can't comprehend the love of God how can we strive to do it? Strive to be like God. I feel we are all works in progress when it comes to love. I thank God for His mercy and His grace...to get it right, one day. I thank God for His example. We are commanded to be imitators of God. An imitator is one who resembles or is a copy. God, please give us the God kind of love, which comes from you and help us all to be examples of love.
